The Annual Meeting of Rate- payers of the town and school dis- trict. was held on Monday last. in the town hall when a yery repre- sentative group of ratepayers were present. .
The School Trustees report was very gratifying and the chairman (R: “H. Struthers) expressed the eomplete satisfaction of the board with the present condition of affairs.
He intimated that in the verv near future the school district would be faced with the necessity for pro- viding an extra teacher end more accommodation for pupils, brought about by the increasing number of pupils and by government require- ments.
A. T. Connolly in moving a vote of thanks to the Board commended the trustees for the satisfactory re- port submitted, and in seco:ding the motion G. H. Travis patted the board on the back for its economy and stated that as long as it con- tinued to ignore the suggestions ‘made by irresponsible people. who were not ratepayers for fancy ‘stunts, it would continue to ones his blessing.

sturdy vessels varying between 3,750 | dead-weight tons, and 8,400 dead-weight tons, in operation between ports in Canada, the United Kingdom, the British West Indies, Cuba and South Within a few weeke Australia will be included in the list. Sailings to ether ports in Great Britain and else- Where are now under consideration,
The Canadian federal plan calls for-a fleet of sixty ships having a gross dead- weight of approximately 300,000 tons. They belong to Oanadians as a whole. Canadian Government Merchant Marine Limited, is the name of the company to operate them under the direction of Canadian National Railways,
Already---no- doubt because of the ships---there is a quickening of interest among Uanadian business men in outside affairs, affairs that up to a few months
go exoiled scarcely any comment. In
‘late weeks the Weet Indies, for example-
-rat least their relation to Great Britain and to Canada---bave occupied consider- able space in the daily grist to the Press. The trade of the West Indies with Canada has developed into an iuteresting topic in business Canada. That trade at present does not worry federa) statisti- cians who keep record of the Nation's business deaiings abroad, but it bas wonderfully ~ — bright possibilities, ‘National’ ships have made 14 yoyuges to and from the West Indies. They have carried southbound practically all classes of general merchandise, and they briug back the goods Canada imports from those fertile sunny lauds. That is all very well for a begining, but in the tuture there otght to be, between Can- ada and the West Indies, a development of trading that would make the present figures appear utterly insignificant.
The West Iudies import approximate- jy 65 million dollars worth cf flour, rice, salt meats, fertilizers, Loote and shoes, beer and wine, apparel, haberdashery, beet and sacks, bats and bonhets, lard,
milk, corn meal, soap, butter,
{ oud pte cn hardware, machinery ,
the exports and imports
geas to ascertain better the lines this development in t-ade should follow.
There is another aspect of Canadian joreign trade, that will be greatly moui- ued if not entirely removed, as the coun- try’s commerce with outside lands grows vy the utilisation of our national yeseels. in Canada we have been at the losing end as far as a considerable list of im- ports has been concerned, Our friends to the south have been acting as inter- wediary, They have been importing goods from otber lands and we Luve been unporting from them, There seems tv ve no valid reason why this unéatis- factory system of conducting business guould go on now that we have the sbips to bring the goods in question from foreign lands to Canadian ports. There is no valid reason why American vessels and American railroads and American prokere should profit out of tue handling
of these Canadian imports, if the National ships of Canada can bring the goods direct to Oanadian shores.
Officers of the Canadian Goyernment Merchant Marine Limited and Canadian national Railways in seeking out ton- nage for the Nutional boaw find tue feature of Canadian trading to be a reul barrier in the finding of cargo. A large number ‘of Canadian manufacturers haye traded heretofore with outside countries, aud it appears to have been a general custom to eell their goods through American firms, ‘Lhese American firms, uaturaliy, have a good deal to say when ic came to the matter of routing the ton- uage so handled. Oonsequently there has begun, since the National boats haye veen in service, a movement to show Canadian manufacturers the advantages ot doing business direct with foreign houses, in this way developing ports in Canada and providing tonnage for the rails and sbips of the Nationa! lines,
‘which is so ‘pili that there is not some little thing

Brotherhood Between Men
Country Needing Some Great Revival of Civic Spirit
The Bishop of Birmingham writes in a’ recent diocesan letter: “Our country is at the present time need- ing some great revival of civic spirit, and the church must not be negligent of its duty in seeing to it that the will of God becomes the basis of Britain's future policy. I am bold to say that brotherhood between men, which is the very. essence of Chris- tianity, will heal all the diseases now existing in the body corporate. We want that brotherhood right the way through; between rich and poor; be- tween the various religious bodies in the country, and gradually but surely between the nations of the earth, Let us establish it at home, and we shall than greatly influence the world as a whole. I am not afraid of the work- ing classes in this matter. If we in Birmingham read with any care the accounts of the conference of the In- dustrial League in this city, we must have been ‘struck. with the great ca- pacity and the great idealism in those workets gathered from all parts of our land. They were the leaders of,

Their stamina and endurance are extraordinary, and although some fall exhausted into the sea, the bulk make a successful crossing. The butterfly army of invasion generally includes many beautiful specimens, and as an illustration of their powers of endur- ance, it might be mentioned many butterflies have descended to rest on vessels 200 miles at sea.
